GPS Accuracy Explained: How Precise Is Your Vehicle Tracker in India, and What Affects It?

"The app shows my car is 50 metres away from where it actually is." We hear this occasionally from customers across Patna. GPS accuracy is not a fixed number — it varies based on environment, hardware, and sky visibility. Here's everything you need to know.

What "GPS Accuracy" Actually Means

GPS accuracy refers to the difference between the location your tracker reports and the vehicle's actual physical location. Stated as "3-metre accuracy," it means the dot on your map will be within a 3-metre radius circle of your real location — 95% of the time.

For vehicle tracking purposes, accuracy of 3–10 metres is more than sufficient. You can determine which road, which lane, which parking spot your vehicle is in with this level of precision.

Typical GPS Accuracy Levels in India

Environment Typical Accuracy What You Can See on Map
Rural Bihar highway (open sky)2–3 metresExact road side, lane position
Patna suburban roads (low-rise)3–8 metresSpecific road, correct address
Patna city centre (Fraser Road area)5–20 metresCorrect block, may show adjacent road
Open parking lots3–5 metresSpecific parking spot visible
Multi-storey car park (ground level)15–50 metresCar park entrance area
Underground / basement parkingNo GPS signalLast known position (car park entrance)

What Causes GPS Inaccuracy?

1. Urban Canyons (Tall Building Reflections)

When your vehicle drives through areas with tall buildings on both sides — like Patna's Exhibition Road or Fraser Road commercial areas — the GPS satellite signals bounce off building facades before reaching your tracker. This "multipath effect" confuses the tracker about which satellite it's receiving signals from directly, causing temporary position errors of 10–30 metres. The problem resolves the moment you move to an open area.

2. Sky Visibility (The Most Important Factor)

GPS trackers work best when they have a clear, unobstructed view of the sky. This is why tracker placement inside the vehicle matters:

  • Best position: Dashboard (facing windscreen) or under the rear window parcel shelf — maximum sky visibility
  • Good position: Under driver or passenger seat — reduced but workable signal
  • Poor position: Inside the boot/dicky, inside the engine bay, or inside thick plastic door panels

AlikeGPS installers in Danapur are trained to place the tracker for optimal antenna orientation, balancing sky visibility with concealment from potential thieves.

3. Ionospheric and Atmospheric Conditions

GPS signals travel 20,200 km through space and then through Earth's atmosphere. The ionosphere (a layer of charged particles 80–1,000 km up) can slow and refract GPS signals, causing position errors. During heavy monsoon thunderstorms — common in Patna from June to September — atmospheric interference can temporarily reduce accuracy by 5–10 metres.

4. Number of Satellites in View

Accuracy improves with more satellites. Under open sky in Bihar, your tracker may receive signals from 8–12 satellites simultaneously — enabling 2–3 metre accuracy. When satellite count drops below 4 (in parking garages or dense urban canyons), the tracker may refuse to calculate a position at all, defaulting to the last known location.

5. Cold Start vs. Warm Start

After your tracker is switched off for an extended period, it needs to "acquire" satellites from scratch — this is called a cold start and takes 30–60 seconds. During this acquisition period, the tracker may show inaccurate positions. Once the tracker has been running continuously for a few minutes, it maintains satellite lock and provides consistently accurate positions — this is called warm start and takes only 1–3 seconds.

How AlikeGPS Maximises Accuracy

Our trackers use advanced GPS+GLONASS+NavIC multi-constellation receivers, which simultaneously receive signals from three satellite systems — the US GPS system, Russia's GLONASS system, and India's own NavIC constellation. More satellite signals = better accuracy across all conditions.

Combined with proper professional installation that optimises antenna placement, AlikeGPS delivers consistent 3–5 metre accuracy in most of Patna's urban driving conditions.

"App mein dekha ki driver ne Danapur to Maner route liya instead of Danapur-Bihta. 3 metre accuracy se exact stop points bhi dikh rahe the — petrol pump pe ruka, fir kahan gaya sab pata chala."
— Suresh Yadav, Fleet Owner, Patna

GPS Accuracy for Specific Patna Use Cases

  • Anti-theft: 3–5 metre accuracy is sufficient to guide police to the exact vehicle in a crowded area
  • Driver monitoring: Accurate enough to confirm whether the driver took the assigned route or deviated
  • Fleet dispatch: Accurate enough for real-time dispatch optimisation — seeing which vehicle is closest to a delivery location
  • Teen driver monitoring: Accurate enough to confirm if your teenager's car is at school or has detoured to another location

Track Your Vehicle with 3–5 Metre Precision

AlikeGPS uses multi-constellation GPS for maximum accuracy across Patna, Bihar highways, and rural roads.
